“Co-regulation” is the ability for one persons nervous system to help calm another’s nervous system.
Co-regulation can be a helpful tool when you’re struggling to self-regulate your nervous system (“self-regulate” – is the ability to utilize personal tools like breathing, vision therapy, play, or movement that help steer your nervous system out of a reactive state where pain, anxiety, and overwhelm are present).
Here are a couple of co-regulating tools that can help you create a sense of ease.
Hugging for just 20 seconds releases the hormone, oxytocin. Oxytocin has been shown to boost the immune system and reduce stress.
Deep breaths (done together) – syncing your breathing with someone who is calm and relaxed can help you move our of a trauma response, as full breaths increase activation to the parasympathetic nervous system (our rest and digest part of the brain).
